Lets clear something up: cartoon covers do NOT mean clean content
At Beyond the Spice Level, we created this site to help romance readers find the books that match their spice tolerance, emotional needs, and favorite tropes. But along the way, we realized something:
A lot of romance books marketed with cute covers or fun titles are absolutely not kid-friendly. In fact, many include explicit sex scenes, mature themes, trauma, or adult humor even when they look like a light-hearted YA read.
So, while this site is not designed for children, we know that concerned parents, teachers, librarians, and even older teens may find it useful when trying to understand what a book actually contains.
Here is How We Can Help
- We break down romance books by spice level (how descriptive the scenes are)
- We tag emotionally intense or traumatic content when appropriate
- We include notes about fade-to-black vs. graphic descriptions
- We highlight when books contain adult language, kink, or taboo dynamics
IMPORTANT:
- Beyond the Spice Level is a site built for adult romance readers, not children or teens
- We are not a rating board or parental advisory system
- We encourage all parents to research books before giving them to younger readers, especially if they include romance or emotional content
Use this site as a guide to avoid accidental exposure to adult content and remember that covers can be misleading, blurbs can be vague, and “romance” means very different things depending on the shelf.
We’re here to help you avoid surprises and make informed reading choices no matter who you’re shopping for.
